George Steinbrenner story. My mother's parents were divorced and her father lived in the city, while the four kids lived with my grandmother upstate. one weekend he took the kids to a Yankee game. this was in 1974 or 1975 because it was at Shea, where the Yankees played home games while the Stadium was being renovated. the game was sold out and my uncle, then maybe 9 or 10 began to cry. Steinbrenner happened to be passing by (on the sidewalk outside the stadium) saw the crying child, found out what was wrong, and invited them to sit in his personal box with him. They watched the game, were waited on by Steinbrenner's assistants (all for free) and after the game he gave my grandfather his card and said to call him if he ever needed tickets again. People can say whatever they want about the New York Yankees or George Steinbrenner, but it doesnt take away from the fact that he and his organization treated their customers with class. I dont think demanding results from your wealthy, highly paid employees makes you anything other than a rational businessman, and no one doubted his business acumen.

you have to credit him for his passion, his charity, his patriotism, and his personal talent and force of personality.

Rush - the thing about being morally opposed to homosexuality, I think that's an incorrect standard to apply to anybody, because I don't know too many people who think it's a choice. In some cases, where women have admitted it later on where they've chosen it after a life time of what have you, but it's rare. You can't say something that isn't a choice, uh attach moral and immoral to it. 

2 hyppocrites, both of whom come out with ignorant opinions that generally irritate all normal people. Rush doesnt like blacks or immigrants or any kind of social consciousness, he lightens his tone for the gays and drug use bc he is down w/ both. ELton-JOn doesnt give a shit about Israel smushing out the palestinians, as long as he gets mad shekels. Bet he played at Sun City

i think i musta been real drunk or hung over yesterday because, when i look back at my own editorial i totes disagree.
The stereotypes associated with americans have low brow connotations. But since when was trusting stereotypes or being proud of such things normal behavior. I doubt the pols think of themselves as dumb, nor do the french see themselves as stripe shirted bastards, nor the brits think theyre really fuckin ugly. But the asians def think theyre all intelligent as a motherfucker.
Anyways in America the appreciation of the low brow and cheap is plentiful but thats not completely appalling. In enjoying the silly mundane and trashy we have opened our arms to the estranged , the poor, and the ignorant and reminded them that it is not hard nor always expensive to act like an american.

But with that said theres some sick american classy things, especially in the arts. Which is not to say that makin technology is not mad clutch as it makes everyday tasks cooler, but whether it makes them simpler, easier and our lives happier is def still up for debate

America is a fine land. it doesnt seem like america has any high culture to speak of. the fields in which European nations excelled historically (and some asia ones) including philosophy, classical music, fine art, architecture, writing, other shit like that, we tend to not do quite so well. we have pretty damn good low culture versions of those pretentious pastimes. these include pop music, hollywood movies, a beautiful national freedom n whatnot creation myth, which many newspaper columnists and lohud commentators believe. not sure what else we have done. does america have anyone as cool as nietzsche? maradona? what do we have? who is an emminent american in their field (the world over) probably some kind of scientist (not rlly interested in that, not tangible, feel like its probably not that hard to devise new electronics n whatnot if are a mechanically minded person) America used to be better. We had gangster powerful statesmen like Lincoln. the wild west. no standing military. no social services. no income tax. even after all that shit went away we were still killing it. people used to work less, make more, and (maybe?) be happier. maybe life then was more simple, without cable news, bank things, and all of the pressures of the modern world. maybe a country where nepotism runs the whole show is not so great. America's de facto Aristocracy is not some easily identified industrial or political family. it is simply every rich person, whose children grow up with every opportunity handed to them. not that any country is a meritocracy, but by sheer virtue of America's size it means the global impact of spoiled rich kids is huge. by oppportunity one refers to understanding of white-collar/upper class world, and access to it. most people dont even know any financiers, much less have one be a golf buddy of u daddy n give u mad internship (example) u are basically born into your life station. hardly anyone seems to move too high up social/economic ladder. as far as going down the ladder-> no one ever does.

people in entertainment/sports dont count. only like michael jackson, tom cruise, and the owners of sports teams ever manage to keep enough of the money they make to set their kids up.
